Men’s Health Week: A Time To Pause, Reflect & Take Action

Men’s Health Week 2025 is set to take place from Monday, 9 June to Sunday, 15 June. This annual observance aims to raise awareness about the health challenges faced by men and promote strategies for better physical and mental well-being.

Why Men’s Mental Health Matters

Mental health is a critical component of overall well-being, yet men often face unique challenges in this area. Societal expectations and traditional notions of masculinity can discourage men from seeking help or expressing vulnerability. This reluctance contributes to concerning statistics: in Australia, suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 45, with men accounting for approximately 75% of all suicides.

Recent events have highlighted the urgency of addressing men’s mental health. The AFL community, for instance, has been rocked by the suicides of six former players, prompting calls for more effective mental health support within high-performance environments.

2025 Campaign Theme: ‘See Your GP’

This year’s Men’s Health Week campaign, spearheaded by Healthy Male and the Centre for Male Health, urges men to prioritize their well-being by consulting healthcare professionals. The ‘See Your GP’ initiative emphasizes the importance of seeking medical advice from qualified practitioners rather than relying on informal sources.

Events and Initiatives

A variety of events and programs are scheduled throughout the week to promote men’s mental health:

  • Online Workshops: headspace Schools & Communities will host an interactive online event for young men and boys, including trans-men and boys, in secondary schools across Australia. The workshop aims to encourage help-seeking behaviour and increase mental health literacy.
  • Community Gatherings: The ‘When No One’s Watching’ (WNOW) initiative offers weekly gatherings that include sunrise exercise sessions, trust circles, and group coffee meetings. These events provide safe spaces for men to connect and discuss their mental health.
  • Men’s Health Week Chats: The Australian Men’s Health Forum (AMHF) will host a series of online discussions covering topics such as stroke risk, healthy aging, and mental health facts.
  • Local Events: Various community centre’s and organizations will hold events like barbecues, health checks, and mental health response workshops to engage men in conversations about their health.
